The GAO

The Grad Graduate Affairs Office (GAO) is tasked with supporting both graduate student trainees enrolled onto the Ph.D program and Faculty members of the Department. The GAO attempts to ensure that students are protected from the malaise, which can inflict students navigating a large University. 

Staff have functionally specfic areas of work; including outreach and admission, recruitment and student life, financial support and resource allocation.

 

Bobby Ewing, Graduate Program Manager

Functional Responsibility: 

  • General Advising (incl. academic difficulty, issues/grievances)
  • Fall Outreach (incl. recruit student reps, ABRCMS coordination and reimbursements)
  • Admissions (incl. interview scheduling and communication)
  • Y1 activities: Orientation (incl. Card Key access), FERPS, SMS, Rotations and Dissertation lab placements, and Ethics Class Coordination
  • Y2 activities: Qualifying Examinations and Advancement to Candidacy
  • Degree Requirements, Registration and Enrollment
  • Dissertation Committee Meetings
  • Dissertation Filing
  • Commencement Script (incl. Mentor Comments)
  • MBAS staff support (incl. reimbursements)
  • Graduate Affairs Committee - program representative

Irlanda Gonzalez, Graduate Program Coordinator

Functional Responsibility: 

  • Fall Outreach (incl. swag, SACNAS coordination and reimbursements)
  • Recruitment Visits (incl. program planning & coordination with students and recruits, payments, swag)
  • Quantitative Bootcamp meals
  • GSI appointments (hiring,  MCB 375 & MCB 380 enrollment)
  • 290 Seminars (coordination with faculty and tracking)
  • Fellowship & award nominations, MCB Travel Grant and IMM Travel Grant management
  • Student Organizations and Events (incl. Koshland seminars)
  • THERPS (incl. room reservations)
  • Reimbursements - all except MBAS
  • Commencement (incl. event planning, faculty regalia, program, speaker travel coordination)
  • Graduate Affairs Committee (incl. meeting scheduling, agenda, and minutes)

Eric Buhlis, Graduate Student Financial Specialist 

Functional Responsibility: Eric is responsible for providing a broad range of training grant and graduate student financial support. He oversees graduate funding packages for current students, and coordinates training grant administration, data gathering, reporting, as well as RPPR and renewal submissions.

Bio: My name is Eric and I was working in the College of Chemistry when my supervisor transferred to MCB. She saw an opening for me and the rest is history! I've been with the GAO for 15 years and I've been at CAL for almost 16 years.
